What is included?
Our prices include your accommodation on a B&B basis, luggage transfer, walk notes, a route-marked OS map, a transfer back to your starting point (where applicable), details of places to eat and things to see on your route and the ‘Muddy Boots Survival Pack’!
Transfers to and from train stations can be included for an additional charge.
See the ‘walking holidays’ page for more information.
When can I travel?
Unlike many walking holiday providers, we don’t restrict our trips to the summer months – if you want to walk in winter, we’re all for it! You should, however, bear in mind that routes can get wet and boggy in places and be harder to navigate in bad weather. You will also have fewer daylight hours so should go for routes that you are confident of completing within that time. If the weather is so bad one day that you don’t want to do the walk, you can always arrange a taxi to your next destination or we can help you find an easier or lower level alternative route, if available.
How does the booking process work?
Have a look at the website to get an idea of which trip you would like to take then get in touch to discuss your requirements and dates. We will then check availability and send through a quote with all the trip details.
If you decide to make a booking, we ask for a 20% deposit to confirm with the balance due 30 days before your trip. Cancellation charges are set out in clause 6 of our terms and conditions, which you can find here.
Once we receive the deposit, we will send you your full information pack by email, including full details of your accommodation, detailed walking routes and information about the area you are visiting.
Can I extend your standard routes or add extra time to my trip?
Yes. It is not a problem to add extra days into any of our routes and we can easily suggest walks and other activities for your additional time, if you would like us to do so.
How do I get to the starting point of the route?
If you are travelling by car, you simply drive to your first accommodation and can leave your car there for the duration of your trip. If it is not a circular route, we will arrange transport back to the starting point for you to collect your car (or privide details of the transport options, as applicable).
If travelling by public transport, you can take the train to the nearest mainline station and we can arrange a taxi transfer from there to the starting point and back at the end of the trip, or explain publid transport options, if available.
I don’t want to travel by car, can I still do one of your trips?
Yes! You can travel by train to the nearest/most convenient mainline station and we will arrange taxi transfers there and back at the beginning and end of your trip (or explain public transport options, if available).
What type of accommodation do you use?
Our accommodation is primarily in traditional country inns and small hotels, all of which offer good rooms, good food and a good atmosphere at the end of a day’s walking!
All of the accommodation we have chosen are really nice places to stay (rather than budget options) but, in some places, it is possible to choose an upgrade for an additional cost, either to a higher grade of room or to a nearby hotel. See each route’s page or get in touch for details.
The guide prices on this website are based on two people sharing a double or twin room but single and family rooms are often available, so get in touch to find out about pricing for these options.
Do I need to be an experienced walker to do one of your trips?
No – if you rarely do country walks and have never done hotel to hotel walking before, that is not a problem! In fact, we love to get people involved in walking for the first time.
We recommend often recommend the ‘Wharfedale Ramble’ to those who do not have previous walking experience, but any of the routes are achievable with a reasonable level of physical fitness and we will explain to you how it all works and make sure you are ready for your trip!
Do I need to know how to read a map?
It helps! We provide detailed route notes to help you find your way but we also provide an OS Map and it is sensible to familiarise yourself with your route and how to follow it before setting off.
The OS App is also a great option. For a small fee you can access your OS map through your smartphone, which means the GPS can show you exactly where you are on the map at any given time, making it really easy to get back on track in the unlikely event you lose your way!
We can also provide GPS coordinates for our routes to help with navigation, if you would like them.
CAN you provide GPS coordinates?
Yes. If you like to walk using a GPS device or App, rather than just a traditional map, that is not a problem and GPS coordinates can be provided with your walking notes. We can also provide links to your routes to use on the OS App.
What happens if the weather is bad and I don’t want to walk?
If you decide that you do not want to do the scheduled walk on any day, that is absolutely fine. If this is on a day that you were due to walk between hotels, the easiest option is to arrange a taxi to take you to your next destination (or in some cases, there may be a public transport option). Your accommodation should be able to arrange this for you, but if there are any problems you are welcome to contact us and we can make the arrangements for you.
What clothing should I bring with me?
British weather is famously unpredictable and varied, and that is certainly the case in the Lakes and Dales! We advise always bringing a range of clothing, so that you have something light for warm weather (unless you are travelling in the cooler months) and waterproof clothes in case of rain. Including waterproof trousers can be a good idea, as you will be much more comfortable for the rest of the walk if you are able to keep dry in a downpour! Our luggage transfer service means you don’t have to worry about adding in a couple of extra changes of clothes as you won’t have to carry it all with you.
The most important thing to have is comfortable walking shoes/boots that have been well worn in before you start your trip. Bringing a second pair of shoes so you have something lighter to wear in the evenings/when you aren’t walking is also a good idea.
If you book a trip with us, a full packing list will be included in your ‘Walkers Survival Pack’.
What food is included in your trips and what should I do for other meals?
All accommodation is on a bed and breakfast basis, so you will have a full breakfast to set you up for your walk!
Other meals are not included but we provide information on possible places to stop during your walks or you can order a packed lunch from your accommodation the night before to take with you.
All of our accommodation offers evening meals.
If I have a problem while I’m away, are you available to help?
Yes! Staff at your accommodation are often the best port of call if you have questions about your accommodation, would like help arranging transport etc., but we are always available to help if you need us. You can contact us in our office during office hours or on the mobile phone of your Muddy Boots contact outside these times (or if there is no answer in the office – we might be out on a walk!).
Do I need to have travel insurance?
We recommend that all of our customers take out travel insurance for their trip to ensure that they are covered for unexpected cancellation or curtailment of their trip (as well as loss of personal possessions etc.). Details of our cancellation policy can be found in our terms and conditions, here.
Can I bring my dog with me on my walking holiday?
Yes! All of our accommodation is dog friendly but there is often an extra charge relating to the additional cleaning of a room when a dog has been staying. If you would like to bring your dog with you on your walking holiday, get in touch and we will let you know the options and additional costs.
We do ask that you ensure that you follow the Countryside Code while walking, particularly ensuring that your dog does not worry farm or wild animals and that you always clean up after your dog.
